The Stacks (A spark in a dark sky) (2023)
‘’In the dark times, should the stars also go out?’’
In this work, I’m inspired by an object I heard about at a residence in Italy: a candle holder.
The candle holder in question is not a regular candle holder, it’s an object mainly used in mountain areas where there is not a lot of electricity available. You would bring your own candles with you to your friends/family’s house and put it on this object, sharing the light/ electricity collectively and bringing a light to someone’s life. But also, I would like to propose this object can become a material representation of what it means to struggle together as candles are often used to represent the people who are no longer with us anymore or others who are going through difficult times, and to hold space for these people.

Through this work I hope to build a place to invite the audience to participate through gathering and putting on candles to find togetherness within a shared experience and moment. Activism should not only be happening in spaces that can exclude vulnerable groups like demonstrations, meetings, and organisations, it can and should be about more than that.It can be about recognizing and respecting each other’s struggles and creating space for community to grow hope even in the darkest of times. Activism should be the way we build community in the face of despair.
The stakes are constructed in a way where the ceramic objects can be reassembled in lots of different ways over and over again, some work as objects on their own, for example candle holders but function is not needed to be included and cared for.
